The role of antibiotics in therapy of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations

The course of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is related with occurence of exacerbations due to bacterial and viral infections. The main goal in therapy of COPD is prevention and effective treatment of exacerbations. Suitable selection of antibiotics, which takes acount of epidemiological situation, clinical aspects and antibiotic resistance is an important facet of bacterial infections in patients with COPD. The group of patients which benefit most from antibiotic therapy are patients who suffer from severe, reccurent COPD exacerbations with presence of purulent sputum. There is still need to perform a research in order to evaluate influence of prevention actions to natural history of disease.
