Herbal drugs in the therapy of colitis ulcerosa
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic nonspecific inflammatory disease of the bowel. It’s etiology is still unclear, although the decisive factor seems to be genetic. The incidence of ulcerative colitis in the population is rapidly increasing, showing correlation with social status, environment pollution, smoking and even breastfeeding. Treatment includes numerous drugs, such as 5-aminosalicylic acid, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, cyclosporin A, and monoclonal antibodies. Improving quality of life through symptoms control is a main goal in current concepts of IBD treatment. Many clinical trials investigated role of natural therapies and agents in successful control of inflammatory process, showing promising new possibilities of treatment and life quality improvement.
