Vitamin D – biological activity and analytical methods in clinical diagnostics
In the recent years an increasing interest has been observed in the biological activity of vitamin D group, fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for enhancing intestinal absorption of Ca and P. This paper shortly presents the most important compounds in this group, i.e. vitamin D3 also known as cholecalciferol and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Special attention has also been paid to metabolism of vitamin D, synthesis in the skin that is the major natural source of the vitamin, its significant biological role for humans (hypervitaminosis and hypovitaminosis D), and health effects of supplementationits role for humans. Separate chapters were dedicated to methods for quantitative determination of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and other hydroxylated vitamin D metabolites in human serum using both separation techniques (HPLC, LC-MS/MS) and chemiluminescent immunoassay (LIAISON and ELECSYS automated platforms).
Keywords: vitamin D group, biological activity, methods of quantitation.
