The anticancer potential of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – NSAIDs in chemoprevention of cancer
Cancer is one of the major health problems in the world, and ranks third in the classification of the most common causes of death. The scale of the problem and projected further increase in cancer’s incidence makes it necessary to search for new treatment options and chemoprevention of this disease. Increased cyclooxygenase 2 expression in premalignant tissue and malignant tumors create the basis for elucidation of this enzyme role in the process of carcinogenesis. It has been shown that COX-2 is involved in tumor angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis. In preclinical and clinical studies it has been demonstrated that use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), that inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, regularly in specific doses for a long time reduces cancer risk in multiple tissues including those of the breast, prostate, colorectal, stomach and lung.
Keywords: cancer, cyclooxygenase 2, carcinogenesis, nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), chemoprevention.
