Farmacja po kryzysie heparynowym – czy możliwa jest skuteczna ochrona pacjentów przed substandardowymi i sfałszowanymi produktami?

Europejscy producenci i dystrybutorzy leków współpracują ze sobą w szczegółowo regulowanym i kontrolowanym systemie, który powinien dostarczać wysokiej jakości produktów. Niemniej jednak postępująca globalizacja i coraz bardziej złożone łańcuchy dostaw oraz niejednokrotnie bezkrytyczne poleganie na zewnętrznych usługodawcach (outsourcing) stwarzają coraz większe zagrożenie przenikania do legalnej sieci dystrybucji substandardowych i sfałszowanych produktów leczniczych. Obecnie sfałszowane aktywne substancje farmaceutyczne (API) i produkty lecznicze stanowią coraz poważniejsze zagrożenia dla światowego zdrowia publicznego, których potwierdzeniem był tzw. kryzys heparynowy w latach 2007–2008.

Pharmacy after the heparin crisis – can we successfully protect patients from substandard and counterfeit products?
Pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors work together in a robust system to deliver high-quality products, but drug manufacturing and distribution have become increasingly complex in recent years. Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications originate in factories all over the world, moving into the marketplace through supply chains that can involve numerous processing plants, manufacturers, suppliers, brokers, packagers and distributors. Globalization, increased outsourcing of manufacturing, the complexity of pharmaceutical distribution and the existence of criminal actors willing to capitalize on supply chain weaknesses has created the potential for counterfeit or substandard medicines to enter the system and reach patients. As evidenced by the adulteration of heparin and other case studies outlined in this article, these rare but potentially serious events can have grave consequences. Counterfeit active pharmaceutical ingrediences (API) and medicinal products represents a serious threat to world public health.
