Impact of Standard Operating Procedures on the process of providing information to patients during dispensing prescription medicines in community pharmacies
The aim of a study was to assess the model of information provided to patients during dispensing prescription medicines. The study was conducted in selected pharmacies in Poland, in Malopolska, Slask and Podkarpackie regions. Applied method allowed to evaluate both current practice and its modification by the proposed procedure. Results showed that pharmacists do not pay much attention to some of the important elements of the process such as the need of patient’s identification, differentiation between new drugs and treatment continuation, patient’s knowledge about drugs usage, provision an oral and written form of the information, ensuring that the patient understands advice or informing about the medicines’ storage conditions (if applicable). Implementation of the Standard Operating Procedures for defined types of dispensing processes positively influenced the majority of evaluated elements. Frequency of asking almost all the questions and performing most of activities were increased and differences in frequency between the pre-post implementation phases amounted to several dozen of percent.
