Ceftaroline – a new cephalosporin of 5th generation

Ceftaroline is a novel broad-spectrum cephalosporin of 5th generation with activity against MRSA and Gram positive bacteria. It retains the activity of later generations cephalosporins having broad spectrum activity against Gram negative bacteria. Ceftaroline was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (29.10.2010) for the treatment of community-aquire bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and complicated skin and skin structure infections (CSSSI). This is one out of not many antibiotics exhibiting high activity against methicillinresistant Staphyloccus aureus strains (MRSA) as well as against multidrug resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and Enterococcus spp. Ceftaroline is being developed by Forest Laboratories under licence from Takeda. Forest expects ceftaroline to be available to wholesalers by January 2011 under trade name Teflaro.
