Pharmacotherapy of psoriasis. Psoriasis is a incurable, inflammatory, chronic disease, affecting 1-5% of Europeans. It is characterized with hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and inflammatory infiltration in the epidermis and dermis. Its pathogenesis is combining of hereditary and environmental factors. This review presents the clinical manifestation of psoriasis and current concepts on the treatment methods, including topical and systemic therapies such as anthraline, corticosteroids, analogues of vitamin D3, phototherapy, methotrexate, cyclosporin, retinoids. The recognition of psoriasis as an immune-mediated disease has led to the development of targeted biological therapies that modulate specific steps in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. The new biological therapies such as etanercept, alefecept, efalizumab, infliksimab, analimumab were described too.
