Prion diseases - characteristics, diagnostics and therapy. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), or prion diseases, are fatal neurodegenerative disorders in humans and animals for which no effective therapy exists. The pathogenesis of prion diseases is based on the presence of PrPSc, a protease-resistant isoform of the normal cellular prion protein called PrPC. The emergence of acquired forms of human TSEs in younger people, such as variant CJD (vCJD) and iatrogenic CJD (iCJD), have highlighted the urgent need for effective treatments. The paper presents an overview of the current knowledge about the etiology, classification, therapeutic strategies, such as application of RNAi or other effective compounds may hold real promise for the effective therapy of prion disease. The article is based on both Polish and foreign literature, describing of prion diseases.
Keywords: Prion diseases, application of RNA.
