2009-03-25
Pharmacokinetics of drugs during pregnancy is very often changed. Elimination of many antibacterial drugs is enhanced during pregnancy, necessitating either a shorter dosing interval or an increased dose with the standard dosing interval. The purpose of antibiotic treatment in pregnant women is to treat the mother and/or the fetus. Therefore, we should know if antibiotic administered to the mother cross the placenta and reach the fetus. The effect of antibiotic on a fetus depends on the type of drug, the amount of drug taken, the duration of therapy and the trimester of pregnancy. The beta-lactam antibiotics are the most common antibacterial drugs used in pregnant women and knowledge of their safety and pharmacokinetics in pregnancy is needed for adjustment dosage regimen. Keywords: beta-lactam antibiotics, pregnancy.
