Medical therapy of influenza has been usually based on alleviation of symptoms. From among the antiviral drugs the derivatives of adamantane have been mainly used, and since 1999 also neuraminidase inhibitors. The latter inhibitors act against the influenza viruses type A and B, while the adamantane derivatives are effective against the pathogen of influenza type A. The effectiveness of medical therapy is closely related to its early implementation - up to 48 hours since the appearance of the first symptoms.
