Silica polymers and organically modified silica polymers as the matrices for the therapeutic substances. The aim of this paper is to present the potential usage of silica polymers and organically modified silica polymers as the matrices for the therapeutic substances with controlled release. The idea of the sol-gel process, the influence of the physical and chemical parameters on the structure of the sol gels as well as results obtained so far in capsulating the therapeutic substances in gel matrices have been assessed. Moreover, the paper comprises review of references dealing with the preparation of gel matrices methods of introducing therapeutic substances into the matrices and the tests of their stability carried out under in vitro and in vivo conditions.
