Açaí – therapeutic capability based on a phytochemical profile and current pharmacological studies

Euterpe oleracea is a plant native to Central and northern South America. In this area, fruits of the species, called açaí, are traditionally used as a nutrient and as a medicinal raw material. Their health-promoting activities are based on the rich nutritional properties and high content of antioxidants such as anthocyanins, flavonoids and phenolic acids. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in açaí fruit around the world, including our country. In response to this interest, this review summarizes the knowledge on the phytochemistry, use, pharmacological properties and safety of usage of the raw material.
