Health benefits of chamomille (Matricaria recutita L.) ·

Chamomile has been used as an herbal medication since ancient times and is one of the most popular single ingredient herbal teas. It contains various bioactive phytochemicals that could provide therapeutic effects. The biological activity of chamomile is associated with its essential oil and phenolic fractions. The principal components of the essential oil are the terpenoids α-bisabolol and its oxides, and azulenes, including chamazulene. The major phenolic fraction of chamomile contains flavonoids, their aglycones and/or glycosides, coumarins and phenolic acids. The majority of pharmacological actions of chamomille are related to its antioxidant activity which is mainly due to its ability to scavenge free radicals and/or inhibit lipid peroxidation. For this reason, chamomile extracts are known to exhibit many beneficial health effects as neuro-protective, antiallergic, anti-microbial, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory.
