Evaluation of stability of total parenteral nutrition admixtures prepared in Hospital Pharmacy of the Nicolaus Copernicus Pomeranian Centre of Traumatology in Gdansk
The main aim of this study was to evaluate stability of 18 TPN admixtures compounded in the Hospital Pharmacy of the Nicolaus Copernicus Pomeranian Centre of Traumatology for pediatric patients who require home parenteral nutrition. Each of the ingredients content depended on age of the patients, body weight and clinical condition and was supposed to provide sustained body growth. Admixtures were prepared in two-chamber Dimix bags: amino acids, glucose and electrolytes were combined in one chamber and lipid emulsions: Intralipid (20%), SMOFlipid (20%), Omegaven (10%) or Lipofundin MCT/LCT (20%) were placed separately in the second chamber. Preliminary admixtures were stored up to 21 days at +4C. Visual observations, globule size distribution and pH analysis were performed after admixing all components, together with vitamins, (t=0) and after storage for 24 h at 25°C. Irrespectively of the time of storage of the two-chamber preliminary admixtures among 18 total parenteral admixtures only one showed sights of destabilization (creaming). All other formulations were quali ed to be stable during the study.
