Cellulose – physicochemical properties and applications. Part I – physicochemical properties

Cellulose (Powdered cellulose, Microcrystalline cellulose) is widely used in pharmaceuticals. Several different grades of cellulose are commercially available that differ in their method of manufacture, particle size and shape, moisture content, flow, and other physical properties, which can influence on technology and stability of final dosage form. Analysis of the physicochemical properties of cellulose leads to a better understanding of the processes occurring during manufacturing and thus to optimize the process and consequently to obtain the most stable and safety product.
Keywords: microcrystalline cellulose, powdered cellulose, sieve analysis, polymorphic forms.
