Lipoic acid – biological activity and prospects for use in therapy
Lipoic acid (LA), both in oxidized and reduced, acts as a direct scavenger of free radicals. LA has the ability to regenerate the reduced form of other antioxidants and inhibits activation of NF-kB. This antioxidant possesses anti-inflammatory activities, affects gene expression and chelating metal ions. It is used as therapeutic in diabetic neuropathies, mushroom and heavy metals poisoning, as well as in liver disease and neurodegenerative diseases. The broad spectrum of activity LA and low toxicity result in this antioxidant is used in treatment many diseases, particularly in patients with diabetes.
Keywords: lipoic acid, antioxidant capacity, diabetic neuropathy, neurodegenerative diseases.
