Influence of the ingestion of the American cranberry extract – Vaccinium macrocarpon on the urinary tract diseases
American cranberry – Vaccinium macrocarpon is used in medicine for ages as traditional preparations. Nowadays cranberry is widespread used and has well-documented indications in prophylaxis and in the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI). Although the results of clinical trials are sometimes contradictory, there are some well-planned, randomized, placebo-controlled trials conducted on numerous groups of patients that prove the effectiveness and safety of cranberry. Cranberry contains proanthocyanidins which were showed to be responsible for antibacterial effect. In the past it was thought that cranberry inhibits the development and the recurrence of infection because of acidification of urine and increase of excretion of hippuric acid. Now, it was proven that proanthocyanidins inhibit adhesion of uropathogens to uroepithelial cells. The safety of cranberry was also proven on geriatric population, pediatric population and on pregnant women. In this review the newest and the most important investigations about the usage of cranberry in different urinary tract diseases are presented.
