Cardiovascular diseases comprise a huge epidemiological problem in the world today. Coronary artery disease is a major cause of mortality in developed countries. More frequently, there is also its advanced form - multivessel coronary artery disease. Still, numerous researches are conducted for new coronary risk factors that would enable earlier and accuratier diagnosis and an assessment of the risk of coronary artery disease. Underlying cardiovascular diseases is endothelial dysfunction which initiates formation of atherosclerotic lesions. Markers of impaired endothelial function, among others is higher concentrations of thrombomodulin and von Willebrand factor in plasma. Agents damaging vascular endothelium are also reactive oxygen species (ROS). In turn, a marker of oxidative stress is considered the level of plasma’s carbonyl proteins.
