Diseases of our civilization. Age-related macular degeneration - part I
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of significant, irreversible central visual loss in the Western world. It is characterized by changes of the sensory retina, retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris in the macula. The clinical signs of AMD include: dry (drusen, atrophic changes) and wet (choroidal neovascularization, hard exudates, subretinal fluid) alterations. Regular control visits and detailed examination are crucial to make the proper diagnosis and order the best treatment.
Keywords: age-related macular degeneration, drusen, choroidal neovascularization.
