Application of magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) in technology of oral solid dosage forms. MRI is one of quickly developing analytical methods, which allows for non-invasive cross-sectional imaging of analyzed objects and living organisms in micro- and macro-scale. MRI is widely used in medicine but its application in pharmaceutical technology is still limited. Article describes basic questions concerning MRI technique. There is also presented review of it's applications for evaluation of the properties of immediate release and prolonged release dosage forms. MRI was applied for analysis of solvent penetration into the matrix controlled release systems, monitoring of penetration of solvent into the tablets and capsules. Recently MRI is combined with dissolution methods. In case of immediate release dosage forms MRI is used for recording of tablets disintegration.
