Parenteral nutrition in children. Parenteral nutrition is an intervention to provide essential nutrients to patients who are unable to tolerate adequate enteral feeding or for whom enteral feeding is insufficient or contraindicated. Administration of parenteral nutrition in children should not only maintain adequate nutritional status but also sustain growth and neurodevelopment. This paper describes the most important issues regarding pediatric parenteral nutrition including indications to parenteral nutrition, requirements for nutrients, choice of products used for pediatric parenteral formulas and basic rules of physicochemical stability achievement. Types of venous access used for, parenteral nutrition at home as well as types of complications of parenteral nutrition are also mentioned in this article.
