Terapeutyczne i diagnostyczne zastosowania kwasu 5-aminolewulinowego

Therapeutic and diagnostic applications of 5-aminolevulinic acid 5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring aminoacid in the human body involved in heme biosynthesis. After exogenous application it is converted to protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Upon irradiation with a specific wavelength PpIX undergoes activation and produces reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS cause destruction of cell membranes and organelles leading to the apoptotic or necrotic death of the target tissue. Properties of the ALA-PpIX system have been utilized in photodynamic diagnostics and photodynamic therapy of cancer (PDD and PDT). There is a growing interest in ALA-PDT therapy of non-carcinoma skin diseases, including inflammations, infections of different etiology (ALA-PACT) and in cosmetics.
Keywords: 5-aminolevulinic acid, photodynamic therapy, protoporphyrin IX.
