was organized by the Committee on Therapy and Drug Research (CTDR) of Polish Academy of Science and the Commission of Natural Drug and Biotechnology on November 10, 2008 in Warsaw, Staszic Palace. The organizing Committee was represented by: Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Miroslawa Furmanowa - chairman of the Committee, Warsaw; Prof. Dr Eckhard Leistner - Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology, Bonn; Dr. hab. Agnieszka Pietrosiuk - scientific secretary of CTDR, Warsaw; Prof. Dr. Wanda Kisiel - Institute of Pharmacology PAS, Krakow and Prof. Dr. Jerzy Palka, Medical University in Bialystok. Opening the conference Prof. Dr. M. Furmanowa stressed the problems which play important role in our life and are mentioned in the last scientific programme of European Union. These are: how to improve our mental and physical efficiency, how to restore immune functions and how to develop novel drugs and new treatment strategies. These problems have now a higher position than AIDS, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
