w terapii zespołu uzależnienia od alkoholu

Topiramate (Topamax) - a new perspective in treatment of alcohol- addiction syndrome. Alcohol addiction is serious health and social problem. At present, the applied therapy, both pharmacological and psychotherapy, produces relatively modest results. Recent research suggests a role for new generation anticonvulsants in the treatment of alcohol dependence beyond their use in withdrawal syndromes. The results concerning topiramate seem to be especially interesting. Relative to placebo, oral topiramate administration increased the number of abstinent days in alcohol-dependent individuals who received standard medication compliance treatment in a double-blind 12-week clinical trial. The drug also decreased daily alcohol consumption, number of heavy drinking days, and alcohol craving. Subsequent analyses showed that topiramate increased overall well-being and quality of life in these alcoholic subjects, while reducing alcohol dependence severity and harmful drinking consequences.
Uzależnienie od alkoholu jest poważnym problemem zdrowotnym i społecznym. Stosowane obecnie farmako- oraz psychoterapia nie przynoszą zadowalających rezultatów. W ostatnich latach prowadzone są badania nad wykorzystaniem w terapii tego zespołu leków przeciwpadaczkowych nowej generacji. Szczególnie interesujące wydają się być wyniki dotyczące topiramatu. W randomizowanych badaniach klinicznych, podawany doustnie, wyraźnie ograniczał ilość wypijanego alkoholu, wydłużał okres abstynencji, a stosowany dłużej redukował głód alkoholowy. Lek zmniejszał również zmiany zachodzące w organizmie podczas chronicznego picia alkoholu, co korzystnie wpływało na jakość życia osób uzależnionych.
