Farmakoterapia geriatryczna wyzwaniem dla opieki farmaceutycznej
2005-07-16

Geriatric pharmacotherapy a challenge to pharmaceutical care. The aim of the study was to present some rules concerning geriatric pharmacotherapy and to show the case of 74-year old man who declare daily consumption of 13 medicines [8 prescription drugs (Rp) and 5 over the counter drugs (OTC)]. Among drugs used by analyzed subject, there are 3 nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Rp: Rantudil Retard, Ibuprofen; OTC: Aspirin Protect) that may decrease the effectiveness of antihypertensive treatment of diuretics (Tialorid) and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (Inhibace). Moreover, the risk for hyperkaliemia is very high in this individual because of simultaneous consumption of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, diuretic (Tialorid) and OTC drug with potassium (Aspargin). Due to politherapy elderly individuals have a high risk of potentially danger drug interactions partially dependent on uncontrolled consumption of OTC drugs. So, they need a special pharmaceutical care.
