Obesity - a growing clinical problem. Obesity is now considered as a major public health problem. The high prevalence of obesity is observed in adult population in Europe and United States. The simple method to measure of body adiposity is calculation of the body mass index. The indices of body fat distribution, which can be useful in estimation of visceral obesity is waist girth. The major health risk is connected with visceral obesity, which plays an important role in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular complications. Current treatment of obesity includes behavioral interventions (hypocaloric diet, physical activity), which is considered as a primary intervention to promote and maintain weight loss and pharmacological therapy. Medications currently approved to treat obesity focus on decreasing food intake by reducing appetite (sibutramine) or reduction of nutrient absorption (orlistat).
