Analysis of utilization of medication from A02BA and A02BC group – results of the survey study among patients from community pharmacy

In the last decade, a significant increase in consumption of medication from A02BA and A02BC group (according to ATC classification) was observed. Last years the proton pump inhibitors were switched from prescriptiononly to OTC category, and it could be one of the main reason for such significant increase in consumption all other the world. The aim of our study was the utilization analysis of medication from A02B group basing on the information collected among patients from community pharmacy. The survey study was conducted, and the specific questionnaire was dedicated to patients and pharmacists. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the consumption habits and their correctness were conducted. The correctness of consumption was analyzed basing on the therapeutic guidelines and SPC information. The 222 questionnaires were collected, about 60% of them were fulfilled by women. Despite the gender, most of the consumers (n=140, 63%) have regularly been using for the last 12 months at least one medications from the analyzed group. The PPIs are the most often used medications in the A02B group, and 75% of consumers (n=137) had it prescribed by physicians. The overconsumption of medication from the A02BC group is a major problem; overconsumption is defined as a prolonged time of use or use without clear indications. Only 32% (n=71) of A02B consumers use it in accordance with therapeutic guidelines.

Undoubtedly, the use of medication from A02Ba and A02BC group, even if it prescribed by a physician, is not systematically monitored. In future, it could generate the increase in direct medical cost as a consequence of treatment of adverse drug effects of the medication from the A02B group.
