Lipids pose a natural source of energy. According to their chemical structure they are triesters of glycerol and fatty acids. The fatty acids are divided into three groups: saturated, monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fatty acids. There are two main subdivisions as far as unsaturated fatty acids (so called Essential fatty acids) are concerned i.e.: omega-3 acids and omega-6 acids. Unsaturated fatty acids are substrates for the synthesis of eicosanoid tissue hormones that exert control over human cardiovascular system. They regulate blood pressure and coagulability, influence cholesterol metabolism, modify immune function, inflammation process and cell proliferation. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are fundamental for the maintenance of physiological skin properties. They keep a proper structure of intercellular cement. They also exert a beneficial dermatological and cosmetological activity by their ability to incorporate ceramides and phospholipids into membranes of keratinocytes, which is closely related to the rearrangement process in epidermis, and improves their condition and function.
