Application of 3D printing in pharmaceutical technology

Three dimensional printing, which belongs to the additive manufacturing methods, is one of the most dynamically developing areas that is increasingly used in many fields of technical and medical sciences as well as industrial processes. Over the past years, 3D printing has been extensively investigated in terms of its possibility to be used in pharmaceutical technology to develop modern drug formulations and to solve therapeutic problems related to the necessity of personalized therapy usage. Many of currently used printing techniques such as sterolitography, selective laser sintering, fused deposition modelling, and jet-based techniques are analyzed for the potential application in drug formulation. The result of this work is SpritamR the first drug produced with three dimensional printing which has been approved by the FDA in 2015.
