2012-07-03

The legal status of herbal drugs and dietary supplements
High and still increasing interest in herbal drugs in Europe and in the World, is the reason for crucial importance of the need to regulate the legal status of herbal drugs and control of its quality and safety of use. In the legislation systems of European and non-European countries, the medicinal plants and herbal drugs very often occupy different places – they can be treated in the same manner as synthetic drugs or the rules appropriate rather for foods are applied for them. In order to clarify these questions, the definition of a herbal drug set in the European Pharmacopoeia and in the Polish Pharmacopoeia, was provided, as well as the definition given by the World Health Organization. The legal regulations concerning the herbal drugs valid in the European Union, in the United States of America, and in some Asian countries, were provided, too. Separate chapters were dedicated to dietary supplements, as well as to connected with them the problem of safety of the use of herbal drugs as an element of dietary supplements.
