Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the most frequent liver disease worldwide. It is due to a great frequency of metabolic disturbances like obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2, hyperlipidemias. In this review a pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, clinical symptoms and treatment methods were presented. Usually the disease is asymptomatic or has very unspecific symptoms. Important role plays insulin resistance. NAFLD is diagnosed with laboratory tests, liver visualization examiantion, like ultrasonography, exclusion of other factors leading to liver damage. In treatment a diet and lifestyle modification play crucial role. Sometimes additional drug therapy is needed. If the disease is not cured in a proper way, it leads to liver cirrhosis, and sometimes even to hepatocellular carcinoma.
