Visualization and imaging techniques in development and analysis of drugs

Visualization and imaging of drugs is relatively new analytical advance that make possible comprehensive research of complex heterogeneous samples. Imaging techniques allow the simultaneous acquisition of the image of the sample (spatial information) and the registration of the spectra of chemical compounds in an analyzed object (chemical information). It is possible to analyze samples of various sizes and shapes, from the single crystals, granules to the final pharmaceutical forms of the drugs, such as tablets, capsules, freeze-dried products and many others. In this review, some techniques used in visualization and imaging of drugs, such as light microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy and especially Raman spectroscopy, are presented and discussed.
Keywords: drug development, drug analysis, light microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy.
