Histopathological evaluation of Propol-T and silver sulfadiazine therapeutic efficacy in burn healing. Wound healing, including burn healing, is a dynamic, interactive process involving many precisely interrelated phases, overlapping in time, and leading to the restoration of tissue integrity. The healing process reflects the complex and coordinated body response to tissue injury, beeing the result of the extracellular matrix components and different cell types - neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, keratinocytes, endothelial cells and fibroblasts interaction. The well known sequence of histopathological changes of skin structure during the different phases of tissue remodeling allows to apply the experimental model of cutaneous wound repair in which the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of new drugs involving the natural products, can be done. The aim of the present study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy of the silver sulfadiazine and Propol T (1% propolis ointment) in the treatment of minor skin burns inflicted in white domestic pigs. Although silver sulfadiazine is considered to be a gold standard for topical burn therapy, evidence exists that the use of SSD place patients at increased risk of many undesirable effects. The mentioned side effects are absent during the local treatment of the minor skin burns with Propol T, an agent comprising propolis, well known for its anitimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, cicatrization-enhancing, healing time-reducing, patient discomfort-reducing (as regards duration and intensity of pain) properties. An experimental burn wounds were inflicted in the four domestic white pigs, according to Hoekstra standard model. The pig has been proved to be the useful animal model for the evaluation of wound repair because of many similarities of pig skin to human skin. According to clinical and histopathological evaluation, Propol T accelerates regenerative and reconstructive processes, reduces wounds healing time, and exerts a beneficial influence on animal general condition. Beneficial effects of Propol T treatment in healing minor burns, based upon clinical, and histopathological investigations, promise to enable the implementation of this new therapeutic intervention in topical burn management.
