Bioavailability and evaluation of bioequivalence. Bioavailability is the term most often used to characterize drug absorption. This term has been defined as the relative amount of a drug administrated in a pharmaceutical product that enters the systemic circulation. In this article theoretical concept of assessing bioavailability from biological fluids is described. Three indices usually estimated to elucidate drug bioavailability are presented, namely: the maximum drug concentration in plasma (Cmax), the time needed to reach this maximum (tmax), and the area under the plasma concentration vs. time curve (AUC). The aspect of bioequivalence of drug product is also underlined.
